I am the Underwriting Manager at Signature Underwriting - I am responsible for making sure our rates and offering remain competitive, developing and maintaining broker relationships all whilst delivering a profitable return.

This month Martin Cox, Managing Director of Integra Insurance Solutions, takes to the hot seat. Integra Insurance is a new MGA facility to the ever-expanding range we provide access to for standard household insurance.

In a short sentence, tell us what you do in your current role?

I’m the Managing Director of Integra - we are an MGA based in Bradford owned by the Hannover Re Group. The business here was formerly the Congregational and General Insurance Company.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? 

Star striker for Tottenham Hotspur

What characteristic do you most admire in others?

Being appreciative and respective of all

What's the most important lesson you've learned in the last year?

The beer in Yorkshire is considerably better than in London

What super power would you like to have?

Control the weather! My loss ratios would be under control and it would by 70 degrees every weekend

What is one thing that annoys you the most? 

Impoliteness and Everton fans!

If you were stranded on a desert island, what three possessions would you want with you?

I would love to have dinner with my four grandparents now I’m older - they passed on many years ago, I would also invite my son so he could meet them as well.

I am Regional Director for the North with overall responsibility for our offices in Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow. I also manage Stackhouse Poland Wholesale – our Lloyds Wholesale Broking operation based out of the Manchester office

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

An airline pilot

What characteristic do you most admire in others?

Honesty and hard work

What's the most important lesson you've learned in the last year?

Embrace change – it’s not that bad!

What super power would you like to have?

To be able to fly - I enjoy travel and this would avoid airport security and passport control!

What is one thing that annoys you the most?

Where do I start …….. middle lane hoggers drive me mad. I can’t stand inconsiderate drivers.

This month we caught up with Alan Thorne, Vice President of the UK Commercial Division of Allied World Assurance Company (Europe) dac

In a short sentence, tell us what you do in your current role?

I lead a team of specialist underwriters who provide bespoke underwriting solutions for UK commercial companies that have premium spends on their insurance such as Property, Professional Indemnity, Employers’ Liability, Public Liability and Products Liability, etc. We cover everything except Motor. Typically, with Gross Written Premium per case between £1,000 and £50,000.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

A helicopter pilot. I had a lesson six years ago and vowed never to fly in one again as it was the most unstable thing I have ever been in!!

What characteristic do you most admire in others?

Honesty

What's the most important lesson you've learned in the last year?

You can never have too many golf holidays!!!

What super power would you like to have?

I would like to be able to regenerate people’s teeth just by touching them as I have to get knocked out when I go to the dentist as it totally terrifies me. I could make a fortune and no one would ever have to suffer toothache again!!!!

What is one thing that annoys you the most?

Dishonesty

If you were stranded on a desert island what three possessions would you want with you?

  1. A toolbox to build things
  2. The complete Encyclopedia Britannica so I would always have something to read
  3. My golf clubs so that I could practice every day ready for when I got rescued

I have never seen the likeness myself, however, people have said I look like Simon Cowell - who I really dislike as he destroys people’s dreams!!!

This month we caught up with the notorious Neil Hayden, Broker Manager at Markerstudy Insurance Services Limited (MISL).

In a short sentence, tell us what you do in your current role?

My title is Broker Manager. This involves managing a portfolio of insurance brokers UK wide in all aspects of their dealings with MISL. From accounts, policy ops, to development and account performance management across all products. The role also entails sniffing out that new opportunity that one day “Rodney” will make us millionaires…  

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

Airline pilot

What characteristic do you most admire in others?

Hard work, honesty and a good sense of humour oh and able to have a few alcoholic beverages..

What's the most important lesson you've learned in the last year?

Never to trust an off duty Thailand police officer

What super power would you like to have?  

Extendable arms. So I can reach in to the kitchen without moving off the sofa and grab a pint off the bar from the beer garden

What is one thing that annoys you the most?  

People who don’t say 'thank you' and display simple good manners oh and middle lane hoggers
