In a short sentence, tell us what you do in your current role?
Sparta is a family. My role in that family is ensuring my family members are happy, fulfilled with a sense of purpose that cares for our partners. In doing so, every other objective seems to fall into place.
Did you choose the insurance profession or did it choose you?
It chose me. I left a successful career as a police officer to embrace an exciting opportunity in the challenging world of insurance.
What is something that people are obsessed with, but you just don’t get?
The comparison sites. The incessant focus on price instead of value that causes harm to consumers.
What is your biggest frustration with modern technology?
The way it negatively affects human discourse. I am a firm believer that people buy from people they trust. That remains the greatest challenge insurance brokers face, finding ways to communicate with people at a human level. People distrust businesses that only operate on a technological level. They need human contact.
What do you do when you’re not working?
I am a keen photographer and author, having written two books, one on the science of happiness, the other my police memoirs.
What was the last book you read or movie/box set you watched?
The Peaky Blinders. Having discovered that my Great Grandfather was a notorious Peaky Blinder, it made me even more determined to erase the memory of his misdeeds with a more caring legacy.
Who’s your go-to band or artist when you can’t decide what music to listen to?
I have a very eclectic taste in music. Currently, my passion is the 60’s, Bobby Vee, The Everly Brothers, Bobby Darin, The Fortunes, Buddy Holly, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Matt Munro, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, Barbara Streisand to name a few. However, the soundtrack of my years are the artists from Country, R&B and Soul - Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Shalamar (I was proud to meet Jeffrey Daniel who taught Michael Jackson to Moonwalk!), Reggae, Bryan Adams, The Eagles and even some of the up to date stuff, Charlie Puth, Bruno Mars, Darren Hayes, Usher etc etc. I also love the musicals and dance film soundtracks.
Past or present, which five guests would you invite to your dream dinner party?
Alive: Simon Sinek, whose principles of business culture I admire. Jay Abraham for his unequalled knowledge of business. Brian Tracy for his years of personal development , Peter Kay (Comedian), Barbara DeAngelis (Spiritual Author), Deceased: Nipper Read, the copper who nicked the Krays, Jack Slipper who rounded up the Great Train Robbers including Ronnie Biggs, Steve Jobs (Apple Founder), Robin Williams, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Socrates and Plato (Philosophers), the great pioneers Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Walt Disney and Andrew Carnegie.
What is on your bucket list?
To visit OFlag IV Oschatz and Colditz Castle, POW camps where my dad was held in WWII. Places of photographic beauty and spiritual significance.
Finally, why should brokers consider using Sparta?
Sparta was founded to help spread innovative ideas that serve to support the UK Insurance Broking community. The more ideas that are shared, the greater the likelihood those ideas will have a positive impact upon the businesses we serve. There is barely a product or service on the market today that customers can’t buy from someone else for about the same price, about the same quality, about the same level of service with about the same level of features and benefits. Even with a first-to-market advantage, it’s likely to be lost in a matter of months. Yes, we distribute products that add real value, building trust and loyalty between broker and customer, but our greatest desire is to work closely with brokers to help them grow their business by winning more customers and keeping them longer.
