This month, we turn the spotlight on Freddie Kingham, Director of Grantham-based Reach Financial Services Ltd of which Cover My is a trading style. We asked Freddie to shed light on Cover My and its offerings and to provide his thoughts, advice and insights into new ways of working.

In a few sentences, tell us about your business?
Cover My is a digital insurance broker providing niche products including Pet, Gadget and Breakdown Insurance.  Specialising in online distribution, we focus strongly on our service levels and product expertise in order to provide confidence for our customers.

What positives - or new ways of working - have you taken from the pandemic period?
I’ve found we’ve been more engaged across different areas of the business through regular team catch ups using video calls. This has helped the team to connect and build awareness of the roles different departments play above what it says on their email footer. Also the golf course is a crucial area for regular meetings.

What top tips can you share to stay focused and productive when working from home?
I’ve found that my working hours have expanded significantly (hence sending this at 21:38), exercise and breaks have been key throughout the day to keep focused.

In the past few months, what is the smallest change you have made, personally or professionally which has had the biggest impact?
Not finishing the bottle of wine will make me more productive the next day.

What do you enjoy most about working in insurance broking?
Personally I enjoy the complexity that goes into what we do and the security it provides customers.

What worries you the most about the future of insurance broking?
The lack of confidence from consumers driven by negative experiences.

If you could work in any other industry apart from insurance broking, what would it be and why?
I’d have to say some form of professional sport whether that be golf or athletics. Both of these ships never set sail.

If you could offer one piece of advice to someone just starting out in the industry, what would it be?
Listen and learn, take what you can from every area you are involved in. There are so many different aspects to the industry.
